If you’ve ever been shut down in a Dota 2 match by a Doom that eats your core carry before the fight even starts, you know how impactful this hero can be. I’ve spammed over 200 games of Doom in the last 6 months, and I’ve climbed 3 ranks just by sticking to a few simple rules for the hero. He’s one of the few offlaners that can single-handedly turn the tide of a game if played correctly, and he’s surprisingly forgiving for players who are still learning offlane fundamentals. Learning how to play Doom Dota 2 doesn’t require you to master 10 different ability combos or have perfect last-hitting mechanics, either. All you need is a solid understanding of his power spikes, when to fight, and which targets to prioritize to win more games.
Core Ability Priority When Learning How to Play Doom Dota 2
Doom’s kit is straightforward, but the order you level his abilities makes a huge difference in how effective you are in the first 10 minutes of the game. Level Devour first at level 1, no exceptions. This ability lets you eat neutral creeps to steal their abilities, get extra gold, and boost your XP gain, which is how you hit your level 6 power spike faster than almost any other offlaner. I used to waste Devour trying to get the highest level creep possible every time, until I realized useful early game abilities give my team more value than 100 extra gold from a big creep.
After Devour, level Scorched Earth second, and max it first. This ability creates a circle of fire around you that deals damage to enemies and heals you for a percentage of your maximum health, making you almost unkillable in 1v1 fights if you can keep enemies inside the circle. Level Infernal Blade third, a single target nuke that slows enemies and deals damage over time based on their maximum health. Take your ultimate, Doom, every time it’s available at levels 6, 12, and 18. The best neutral creep abilities to target early on include:
- Alpha Wolf aura: Gives +30 damage to all nearby allies, perfect for pushing lanes and winning early skirmishes
- Satyr Soulstealer mana burn: Harasses enemy cores out of lane by draining their mana pool with every attack
- Centaur Khan stomp: Adds an extra AoE stun to your kit for catching out fleeing enemies or initiating fights
- Harpy Stormcrafter slow: A spammable AoE slow that makes it nearly impossible for enemies to escape your Scorched Earth range
You don’t need to hold Devour for high level creeps the entire early game. Even a low level creep with a useful aura is better than saving the ability for 10 minutes for a tiny bit of extra gold. This is one of the biggest mistakes new players make when first learning how to play Doom Dota 2, they waste too much time waiting for rare creeps instead of using the ability to get consistent advantages in lane.
Laning Phase Strategy for Offlane Doom
Doom is almost exclusively played in the offlane, where you’ll be matched up against the enemy safe lane carry and their support. Your biggest priority in the first 6 minutes is staying alive and soaking as much XP as possible, even if you miss a few last hits. Your first goal in lane is to get level 6 as fast as possible, because that’s when you get your Doom ultimate, which can shut down any enemy hero for 15 seconds at level 1, preventing them from using any abilities or items.
Don’t fight too much before level 3, you’re still fairly squishy and don’t have enough sustain to trade hits with two enemies for long. Use Scorched Earth to last hit under tower if you’re pushed in, and use Devour on a neutral creep every time the cooldown is up to get extra gold and XP. For example, if you’re against a Phantom Lancer and Crystal Maiden in lane, you can grab the satyr mana burn ability to drain PL’s mana so he can’t spam his illusions to push you out of lane.
If your support roams to help mid or the safe lane, you can even dive the enemy carry once you hit 6, just make sure you Doom them first so they can’t use any escape abilities or summon their support to help. You can also pull the large neutral camp near your offlane if the wave is pushed to the enemy tower, to get extra XP without risking harassment from the enemy support.
Optimal Item Builds for Every Game Scenario
Doom’s item build is fairly flexible, but there are a few core items you should get almost every game to maximize his impact. Start with a Stout Shield, two sets of Tangoes, a Mango, and optionally a Quelling Blade to make last hitting easier. Boots of Speed first, then either Arcane Boots or Phase Boots depending on your team. If your team has a lot of mana hungry heroes like Invoker or Lina, go Arcane Boots to give your team extra mana. If you need more chase potential to catch out slippery enemies, go Phase Boots.
Blink Dagger is your next core item, no exceptions. You need it to initiate fights and get your Doom off on the right target before they can react. If you’re still figuring out how to play Doom Dota 2, stick to the standard Blink + BKB core before you start experimenting with situational items. Black King Bar lets you cast Doom without getting stunned or silenced first, which is critical if the enemy has a lot of crowd control.
After your core items, pick situational items based on the enemy team comp. Aghanim’s Scepter makes your Doom pierce spell immunity, which is game changing against carries that rely on BKB to team fight. Heart of Tarrasque gives you enough sustain to stay in fights forever and split push without having to go back to base. Assault Cuirass helps your entire team push towers and take fights faster by increasing armor and attack speed. But if the enemy has a lot of magic damage, you can pick up a Hood of Defiance before BKB to stay alive longer in lane.
Team Fight Playstyle and Target Prioritization
Many new Doom players think their job is to front line and tank all the damage for their team, but that’s not the case. Your only job in the first 10 seconds of a team fight is to shut down the enemy’s most impactful hero. Doom the highest impact enemy hero first before they can use their abilities. That’s usually the enemy midlaner like Invoker or Outworld Destroyer, the hard carry like Phantom Assassin or Anti-Mage, or a support with big team fight abilities like Oracle or Winter Wyvern.
Don’t waste Doom on a low impact support like Crystal Maiden unless she’s the only target you can reach, that’s a waste of a 100+ second cooldown that could have won you the fight. That means if the enemy Invoker is about to cast a Sun Strike on your carry, you need to blink in and Doom him immediately to stop it, even if that means you die after. Your team will win the fight for you if you take their biggest threat out of the equation.
After you cast Doom, you can use Infernal Blade on the next closest target, stand in Scorched Earth to deal damage and heal yourself, and use your devoured creep ability to help your team. If your team is behind, you don’t have to force team fights at all. You can split push with your Scorched Earth and Devour gold, you can take towers really fast if no one comes to stop you. If they send one person to stop you, you can just Doom them and kill them, if they send two, your team can take objectives like Roshan or the enemy mid tower elsewhere.
Doom is one of the most fun and rewarding offlane heroes to pick up, especially if you hate playing heroes that require perfect mechanical skill to be effective. You don’t need to pull off fancy combos or hit every skill shot to carry games, you just need to make smart decisions about when to fight, what items to buy, and who to target with your ultimate. Once you get the hang of the basics, learning how to play Doom Dota 2 will help you climb ranks fast, and you’ll be the hero your team looks to to shut down the enemy’s biggest threat every match. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different neutral creep abilities and item builds either, part of the fun of playing Doom is adapting to every new game you load into.
